Miss Lollipop's Lion

It began with a book…

Miss Lollipop’s Lion was published by William Morrow and Company in 1963. Written and illustrated by Judy Varga, this became a most beloved childhood book. Miss Lollipop was an old woman who took in every stray and abandoned animal she could, including a lion, even though she could hardly afford to feed him. This story of kindness and compassion had a profound impact on a certain young reader and is a testament to the influence a book can have on a person’s life.

…and then there was a pup…

who came to us in a sorry state. Despite a rough start in life, she is a jolly little soul who brought laughter back into our lives at a time when we sorely needed it. We named her Miss Lollipop after that dear old woman from the storybook, because compassion for even the most desperate of creatures is what Miss Lollipop taught us. If you visit us at Cavendish Street, you might just get to meet her and then you’ll see why we love her so much.

…and finally, there was a bookshop!

What better way to honour the memory of that childhood book, and a little dog who brings us such joy, than to name this haven for book lovers after the Lollipops who changed our lives. Miss Lollipop’s Bookshop specialises in science fiction and fantasy, and is a place where those who share our delight in a good story set in fantastical or faraway worlds can come in and escape this one for a while. It began with a book, and we hope you’ll leave with a book (or two).
